About Hat Trick Training

KNOWLEDGE – SAFETY – CONFIDENCE

At Hat Trick Training, we strive to provide the necessary knowledge for new gun owners to understand the basics of handguns as well as all gun owners to understand the mindset to responsibly carry a firearm for self-protection. Hat Trick Training is approved by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety as an organization authorized to certify instructors and individuals for Minnesota’s Permit to Carry.

“Hat Trick”, isn’t that a hockey term?

Why yes, yes it is. In hockey, a hat trick is three goals in one game. At Hat Trick Training, our three goals are Knowledge, Safety, and Confidence. The knowledge to understand firearms, the laws governing their use, and the mindset needed to carry a firearm. Safety is imperative since guns are an inherently dangerous tools that needs to be handled with respect. Finally, the confidence to carry responsibly, every day.

Personalized Help

I want to especially compliment you for sharing your gift of being able to size up what it will take for each student to be successful, and then to help them find that helpful practice. I know that Jon and I both appreciated the guidance you gave on how to place our hands when firing, to achieve the most consistent accuracy and comfort. I know, too that we both really appreciated that you offered alternatives to our daughter Hannah so that she could be a reliable shot as well. Clearly, what we had to offer was the wrong fit for her. Now she knows what will suit her best as she purchases her own personal firearm. While we all understand that you were not offering true legal advice during your presentation, we also really appreciated that you listed statutes and circumstances that we can look up and refer to as we seek to obtain further HRO protections for our family in our neighborhood situation.

Doug Is Very Well Spoken

Thank you for all the information you gave us today.  Learned a lot of things I wasn’t aware of.   I really don’t have any negative feedback at all!   Things you did well we’re as follows:

  1. Good communication, great email reminders and the thing I like about you the most is you’re not afraid to pick up a phone and talk in person.
  2. Organization, great presentation, and slides that you knew very well.
  3. Knowledgeable, you know the laws well, the dos and don’ts and we able to easily answer all questions.  You know a lot about guns and gun handling.  Watching you hold guns and use safety was an excellent example for all students.
  4. Probably the most important for me is that you are very well-spoken.  Being in the medical field I have heard countless people talk, what gets me immediately is when speakers say “um” as a space filler.  Never heard you say it once!  You speak well and keep people engaged in what you are saying is my point.
I will contact you for a couple of lessons when I purchase a pistol.

Very Knowledgeable

Thanks again Doug for Saturday morning at the VFW. You were very knowledgeable in the presentation of weapons and how to use them. It was very impressive how you made a point in saying that every gun should be treated as if it is loaded. When you were explaining something from a different piece of equipment, you would always check to see that it was not loaded even though we all knew it. I don’t know how much I’m going to carry, but it sure impressed me on how you could carry that small weapon of yours and not have it be so obvious. Again appreciated your presentation today.

Covered More Topics Than Other MN Permit to Carry Classes

Your class for the renewal of my gun permit definitely met my expectations. You covered topics that were not included in my last class – other state restrictions, types of guns, various MN laws, quick access box, self-defense insurance. I have given your information to my son who also needs to renew his permit.

Patient Teacher

I appreciate all your patience and having a preset shooting drill schedule.  I think as far as getting more comfortable with the pistol, I definitely accomplished that. I will be practicing a couple of times a month, I will reach out with questions and maybe another shooting lesson.

FAQs

Do I need my own gun to take the Permit To Carry class?
No, but it is best if you have your own firearm. Any caliber will do for the class. If you need to borrow one of my guns, I can set you up with a 9mm or a .22LR pistol. Just let me know before the class.

What states will recognize my Minnesota Permit To Carry?
Your MN Permit To Carry is recognized in good amount of states. Since the list of states changes from time to time, we go over the permit reciprocity map in detail during your class.
Are there any hidden or extra fees for the class?
No, your class fee covers the class, range fee, and your certificate of completion. The only "extra” fees would be the fee you pay to your county when you apply for your permit.

What if I am not ready to carry a firearm yet?
Even if you are not ready to carry a firearm on a daily basis, our Permit To Carry is also a great gun safety class. You will benefit from the modules on safety, mindset, self-defense, and situational awareness
